Royal Palaces of Abomey
Penetrate the dense barrier of prickly acacia and enter the complex housing Benin's Royal Palaces of Abomey, the last remaining remnant of the once great kingdom that ruled West Africa for over 300 years. With a circumference of approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles), the ancient city contains a variety of traditional buildings, including twelve royal palaces - one for each king who ruled from the fortified compound. This is Africa at its gritty, unassuming best and provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of the Fon people and their long-vanished kingdom.
