Take the low road to Dijbouti's Lake Assal and soak in the salt-rich waters of Africa's lowest point - some 155 m (509 ft) below sea level. One of the most exciting ways to experience the wonders of this unique ecosystem is to join one of the camel caravans run by the local Afar nomadic tribes. The caravan will give you a fantastic opportunity to experience both the salt plains and brine parts of the lake, both of which help to form a vital part to the local economy. Just remember to bring some pepper along for your meals to help balance things out a bit!
