Turn back the pages of history with a visit to Abu Simbel, one of the most impressive monuments in all of Egypt. Originally carved from the rock mountainside to honor Ramses II and his wife Nefertiti, it was amazingly lost to the desert sands for nearly 2,000 years before being "rediscovered" in the early 1800's. When you visit, it's hard to believe that the entire complex was then completely relocated piece-by-piece in 1968 when the Aswan High Dam was constructed. Its grandeur has not diminished in the least, and it remains one of the most popular and enchanting of all Egypt's many tourist hot spots.
