Spend an hour (or more) watching the steady flow of cargo ships, tankers and pleasure craft as they slowly traverse the narrow locks of Egypt's Suez Canal. First opened in 1869 after 10 years of construction, the canal allows vessels to travel from Europe to Asia without taking the long route around Africa. Today nearly 20,000 vessels pass through the canal each year, making it one of the busiest waterways in the world. While ship-watching will probably never be as popular as people-watching, it still provides an experience that is truly unique in the world today.
