Aapravasi Ghat is a building complex in Port Louis on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, which was the first British colony to receive an indentured labor workforce from India. The British called it 'the great experiment' in the use of 'free' labor to replace slaves. Nearly half a million Indians passed through this immigration depot – one of the greatest migrations in history - mostly to work on sugar plantations. The complex has been preserved and become a focal point for Mauritian cultural identity.
