Piton de la Fournaise
Stare into the belly of the beast when you scale Réunion Island's Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. During its relatively frequent eruptions - about 150 over the past several hundred years - you can witness molten lava flowing directly into the waters of the Indian Ocean, producing an amazing display of cooling steam. But perhaps the best views of all are gained by following the well-marked path up to the volcano's caldera, where you can stare directly into the molten bowels of the earth!
