Great Zimbabwe Ruins
Take a detour off the beaten tourist track with a visit to the Great Zimbabwe Ruins, the former capital of a kingdom that once spanned much of the surrounding region of Southern Africa. The most prominent feature of the ancient city are the massive stone walls that once reached to a height of 5 meters (~ 22 ft) and still present an impressive spectacle when viewed from the surrounding countryside. It's not always easy to arrange to get to this lonely monument, but if you make the effort, you'll gain an amazing insight into a landmark that early explorers struggled to believe had ever been constructed by the local population. It's a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era.
