With a travel rating of 34%, Lesotho is one of the most unique of all African countries, literally being a country within a country, as it is surrounded on all sides by South Africa. While many might initially make the mistake of thinking that it's no more than an "off-shoot" of its larger, more power neighbor, they couldn't be further from the truth. The reality is that Lesotho is a proud, independent country that very much has its own unique characteristics. One of the clearest ways to get a feel for this "kingdom in the sky" - as they call themselves - is to take one of the classic journeys by pony through the mighty Drakensburg Mountains, stopping at villages along the way. For an insight into Lesotho's history, you can take a detour to Ha Baroana, where you can see some of the best preserved early rock paintings to be found in all of Southern Africa. But no trip to Lesotho could ever be complete without a visit to Maletsunyane Falls, one of the most impressive - and least appreciated - falls in all of Africa.
