Somalia Quick Travel Guide
With a travel rating of 22%, Somalia has for generations been caught in the midst of rival forces that have done everything in their power to tear the country apart. The scenes immortalized in the movie Black Hawk Down have forever poisoned most people's view of this country. However, no one should allow the crimes of past to destroy any hope of a brighter future. In time, when the doors to this "lost" country are finally reopened, perhaps the best place for any PlanetHopper! to start will be with a visit to Bakara Market, Mogadishu's central market where you can mingle with the locals and purchase virtually anything. In the meantime, while militias battle for control in the south and pirates prowl along the coast, peace largely reigns in Northern Somalia, which contains the autonomous regions of Somaliland and Puntland. Here, not only can you search for traces of the ancient Land of Punt, you can also see cave paintings dating back to 9000 BC, with the most famous being the Gaal cultural complex. The reality is that Somalia does have something to offer intrepid PlanetHoppers! It just needs to be allowed the opportunity to put its best foot forward.
