Tunisia Quick Travel Guide
With a travel rating of 56%, Tunisia is one of the most accessible of all African countries. only a ferry ride away from continental Europe. It is also a place where you'll be about as securely "on the beaten track" as anywhere else on the entire continent. This isn't all bad, as Tunisia is bound to have something of interest for virtually everyone. At the top of the list has to be the Amphitheatre El Dmej, one of the best preserved Roman ruins in all of North Africa - so good in fact that it stared prominently in both the movies Gladiator and Troy. But not to be outdone, you also have the ancient city of Carthage, which is a suburb of the modern-day capital of Tunis. Then, of course, you can't overlook the awesome Chott el Djerid, the Sahara's largest salt plain and one of the key film locations for the original Star Wars film. (Remember the planet Tatooine?) The Sahara Desert is perhaps the biggest draw for PlanetHoppers! than anything else, as this is easily one of the most accessible places to scale sand dunes and camp out under the stars. So, if you're planning to come for one week, make it two and start planning everything you're going to do well in advance, because Tunisia is one of the world's classic travel destinations. It already has Hollywood's stamp of approval.
