South Georgia Island
Witness perhaps the most amazing collection of Antarctic wildlife to be found anywhere in the world on South Georgia Island, which is part of the Sandwich Island Chain. With no native population, it offers the perfect backdrop for viewing vast numbers of penguins, seals, and reindeer that call this place home. Hop on board a Zodiac and navigate through dozens of glaciers to places like Salisbury Plain, literally carpeted with thousands of regal king penguins. At the Bay of Isles you will find breeding colonies of fur seals and nesting albatross. At Grytviken, a former whaling station, visit the grave of the legendary explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. While South Georgia is without a doubt a remote, cold and inhospitable place, it has recently become a regular stop on the Antarctic tourist route. Lacking any roads or airports, the only access is by sea, with a journey that can last several days through foreboding South Atlantic gales. Rugged, but stunningly beautiful, this sanctuary is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and not easily forgotten.
