Watch the skies for showers of mud when you visit these explosive natural wonders in Azerbaijan, which contains nearly 400 mud volcanoes. These eruptions are driven from mud reservoirs deep within the earth and are connected to messy, bubbling pools on the surface that resembles a witch's cauldron. Release of gaseous pressures sometimes result in huge explosions of mud and flames, with some reaching hundreds of meters in height and visible from kilometers away. Although these mud volcanoes have never grown to the size of a "normal" volcano, Mother Nature does occasionally show her fury. On rare occasions, the explosions have been truly awesome and people and animals have been killed. Generally the mud volcanoes are safe to visit, with the most accessible several kilometers outside of Baku. Visiting should be a truly unique experience, but if the ground starts to rumble and shake, run!
