Chittagong Ship Breaking Yard
Gawk in wonder at the huge rusting hulks of tankers, cargo ships and military vessels that have been brought to Bangladesh's Chittagong Ship Breaking Yard on their final journey, lying about like beached whales. Down the length of the beach, you will find these enormous ships being systematically chopped up for recycled parts. Just imagine the entire bow of a super tanker dropping from its lofty heights into the shallows below. But perhaps even more memorable are the hundreds of workers that swarm over the derelict vessels like a ravenous colony of ants. For the most part, the operation is "low tech", with most of the hulks ripped apart without the use of heavy machinery, relying mostly on the brute force of the yard workers, who in most cases do not wear any protective gear. In the end, when nothing remains, the swarm simply moves to the next vessel down the beach and starts the process all over again...
