Watch the sunrise over Angkor Wat and you will quickly understand why this unique place lives at the very heart and soul of all things Cambodian. As the sun washes over everything, it's easy to imagine this massive complex as the immortal capital of the mighty Khmer Empire, who ruled much of Southeast Asia for centuries. The temple complex was built in the 12th century and is the world's largest religious building and also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Restoration work has continued on the temple since the 1990s and, as a result, has witnessed a large increase in tourism. Angkor Wat is part of the Angkor Archaeological Park and contains the remains of several capitals of the Khmer Empire. It also includes Angkor Thom and the Bayon Temple with hundreds of sculptural decorations. Angkor Wat is located about 20 minutes from Seim Reap and can be reached by driving, including tour buses. If you're really adventurous, take a helicopter flight over the entire Archaeological Park. No trip to Cambodia is complete without visiting this magnificent site. It's a must see on every PlanetHopper's! list.
