Temple of Heaven
Get in touch with your spiritual side as you explore Beijing's Temple of Heaven – literally the Altar of Heaven – a place from which dynasties of Chinese emperors prayed to heaven for a successful harvest. The focal point of the complex is the Hall of Prayer, which is 32 meters (~ 105 ft) high and 30 meters (~ 98 ft) in diameter and at one point was the highest point in the city. Originally, the triple tiers of the temple were painted in different colors. The top was blue, which symbolized Heaven, the middle was yellow to symbolize the emperor, and the bottom was green to represent commoners. Today, the park surrounding the complex is a popular venue in the city, with locals practicing tai chi, flying kites, playing badminton, as well as a number of other activities. The temple draws many tourists and can be easily reached by subway. Make a pilgrimage to this breathtaking site and say a prayer - and perhaps heaven will respond.
