Pay homage to the hundreds of pro-democracy protesters who lost their lives at the 1989 protest in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The square has been a focal point of the city and Chinese politics from the 1949 proclamation that officially formed the People's Republic of China, to the unveiling of the mausoleum housing the remains of Mao Zedong. It is also the third largest city square in the world and has been used as a massive gathering place since its creation. It contains a large 38 meter (125 ft) high Monument to the People's Heroes, and lies between two ancient, massive gates: the Tian'anmen to the north and Qianmen to the south. Along the west side of the Square is the Great Hall of the People. It also the perfect starting point for visitors in their explorations of city of Beijing.
