Wander through the maze of narrow lanes inside of Jaisalmer Fort, the crowning jewel of what many refer to as "The Golden City of India". Built in the 12th century, it is one the largest forts in the world and located in Rajasthan, India. From the moment you catch sight of the sandstone fortress rising out of the surrounding desert, it seems to spring directly from the pages of a Middle Eastern fairy tale. Some of the major attractions of the fort include Raj Mahal, Jain and Laxminath temples and three massive gateways. There are also many elaborate havelis carved from golden sandstone, some converted into museums. But unlike many other ancient forts that lie in ruins, this is actually an integral part of the city of Jaisalmer and home to a quarter of the population. There are even a number of restaurants that serve French, Italian and Indian cuisine. Jaisalmer is a place where you don't need a map or a guidebook to explore. Just start walking and see where your path may lead you...
