Follow the waves of people who descend upon the fabled Taj Mahal in Agra, India. Built in the 17th century by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, it was originally intended to be the first of a pair, with his own mausoleum to be constructed of black marble. Deposed before his architectural dreams could be fully realized, the emperor spent the remainder of his life imprisoned within view of the Taj, which took 21 years to complete. Walk through the main gateway onto the grounds and you will see the elaborately laid out garden and reflecting pool in front of the great Taj. Arrive at dawn or wait till dusk to see the marble edifice glowing pink and sometimes golden; you are guaranteed to become awestruck. Agra is well connected by rail, with express service from Varanasi, Rajasthan and Delhi. Although foreigners have to pay a higher entrance fee, admission to this beautiful building is priceless. It transcends culture and religion and is a place that all PlanetHoppers! should visit at some point in their lifetime.
