Jigokudani Monkey Park
Watch the antics of wild Japanese macaques – also known as snow monkeys - at Jigokudani Monkey Park. People call Jigokudani "Hell's Valley" because of the steam and boiling water that bubble to the surface from deep within the earth; but this place is heaven for the monkeys. The park has a man-made pool around which the monkeys gather, but PlanetHoppers! are likely to encounter monkeys along the way to the pool. The monkeys live in large social groups and have become accustomed to humans. They are definitely full of personality and provide quite a spectacle as they descend each day from the surrounding cliffs to soak in the park's warm thermal springs. Sharing the waters with these cheeky primates isn't recommended, but taking pictures definitely is. So keep clicking and, more likely than not, you'll go away with the strong impression that our two species are more closely related than you ever imagined.
