Stare up in awe at the impossibly tall Almaty Tower, which scrapes the sky at 371 meters (1,219 ft) tall and is the tallest free-standing tubular steel structure in the world. The tower is located on the slopes of Kok Tobe Mountain, just outside of downtown Almaty, Kazakhstan. Since the local area is vulnerable to earthquakes, it is one of the most seismically stable buildings in the world and can withstand one up to a strength of 10 on the Richter scale. There are two observations decks accessible by high speed elevators, but they are not currently open to the public. However, you can take a cable car to an outdoor café at the base of the tower to enjoy some panoramic views of the city of Almaty below, which may be just fine for those who are afraid of heights.
