Ala Archa National Park
If you're an outdoor enthusiast, then Ala Archa National Park in Kyrgyzstan is the "Shangri-La" that you've been looking for. This area of outstanding natural beauty is less than an hour's drive from Bishkek and offers a whole host of activities, including walking, horseback riding, fishing, mountain climbing, to hikes up to magnificent glaciers and waterfalls. There are in fact more than 20 glaciers and 50 mountains in the park. It's also a popular weekend destination for skiers and picnickers and open all year round. Every May 1, the Alpinada Festival sees hundreds of people camp outside and climb Komsomolets Peak, which at 4,140 meters (13,582 ft) is accessible to those in good physical condition. Make sure to visit the beautifully wooded Adygene Gorge, which is home to numerous waterfalls and contains rivers abundant with trout. And if you're really lucky, you may catch sight of the rare snow leopard, so keep you camera close by!
