You are sure to appreciate the spectacle of Naadam, the yearly festival held throughout Mongolia during the midsummer holidays that last for three days but has been held for centuries. Literarily meaning "the three games of men", activities include horse racing, archery and wrestling, Mongolia's most popular sport. Not to be denied any longer, women now participate in horse racing and archery. Another popular Naadam activity is the playing of games using shagai - sheep anklebones - that serve as a form of dice and are also exchanged as tokens of friendship. Perhaps the best place to witness this colorful festival is to attend Naadam of the Country held in the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar during July in the National Sports Stadium. It's kicked off with a colorful parade of athletes, soldiers and monks marching in perfect formation, while musicians play and dancers frolic. After the ceremony, the competitions start and the real show begins!
