Keep a close count as you try to visit as many of the over 2,000 pagodas and temples as you possibly can at Myanmar's ancient city of Bagan, which dates back more than 1,500 years. At its height, there were more than 5000 pagodas here! Located near the center of Myanmar, it was the primary capital of several empires throughout its long and turbulent history and covers 41 sq kilometers (16 sq miles). Ultimately, the city met its end at the hands of Kublai Khan and his Mongol hordes; but even after being sacked, it still continued on for many centuries as a center for Buddhist studies. This goes to show that ultimately war does not always put an irreplaceable stamp on things. Sightseeing tours by car, bicycle or even a horse cart can be arranged. But perhaps one of the best ways to see Bagan is take a boat trip on the nearby Ayeyarwaddy River and watch the sunset over this glorious site.
