Lace up your hiking boots or hop on a Land Cruiser to explore Tajikistan's Pamir Mountains, the "Roof the World", which is a range of incredible peaks formed by the knot of several mountain ranges, including the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush. Perhaps the best way to explore the region is by the Pamir Highway (M41), which cuts through several Central Asian countries, including Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgzstan. The route has been in use for thousands of years and formed one link of the ancient Silk Road; both Alexander the Great and Marco Polo have traversed this difficult terrain. For the adventurous PlanetHopper! the Pamirs offers a vast and spectacular landscape to explore. There are many opportunities to go trekking, mountaineering, camping, and on multi-day expeditions. Located within this area is Tajikistan's remote Gorno-Badakshan Province, where you can see a number of important archeological sites and come across a people that are virtually isolated from the rest of the world, but are often warm and hospitable. Exploring the Parmirs without a guide is not recommended. A number of companies offer tours and travel packages to this area. So, if you want to follow in the footsteps of Alexander and Marco Polo, the Pamirs are the place to go!
