Walk around in a circle in the courtyard of the Registan to admire the intricate architecture of the three madrassahs that have been constructed in the heart of the ancient city of Samarkand. Constructed over a period of two hundred years, the madrassahs include Ulugh Beg Madrasah, Sher-Dor Madrasah, and Tily-Kori Madrasah, which were once centers of learning and are now schools dedicated to the teaching of Islam. Each has their own unique features that includes exquisite mosaic décor, lancet arches, tall minarets, domes, and extensive galleries. The Registan was also a place where people gathered to hear royal proclamations, attend festivals and bazaars, and to witness public executions. While locked away for many years, Uzbekistan is now ripe for tourism. No visit to Samarkand would be complete without a tour of this grand site of lore and learning.
