Hồ Chí Minh Mausoleum
Join the masses that come to Hồ Chí Minh Mausoleum to pay their respects to the entombed Vietnamese leader in Hanoi, Vietnam. Hồ Chí Minh is a huge cultural icon in Vietnam and every town seems to have a museum devoted to him; but the one to visit is in Hanoi. Inspired by the design of Lenin's Tomb in Moscow and containing distinct Vietnamese architectural styles, it is the largest monument in Vietnam. The body of Hồ Chí Minh is preserved in glass inside and on display to the public daily. Even years after his death, the Communist Leader's popularity remains unshaken among the people and clearly shown by the sheer numbers who visit the mausoleum each year. Beyond the tomb, there are other places to explore, including the Presidential Palace, Dien Huu Pagodas, The One Pillar, and the Hồ Chí Minh Stilt House. But the mausoleum is the centerpiece of the complex. For the foreigner, a visit is a strange mix of theater and propaganda that may be hard to come to terms with. Another thing PlanetHoppers! should be aware of. There is a strictly enforced dress code. You have to cover your legs and can't wear shorts, mini skirts, or sleeveless shirts. Despite all these restrictions, it's still a fascinating place to visit.
