Afghanistan Quick Travel Guide
With a travel rating of 16%, Afghanistan is a land that has been jealously fought over by foreign invaders for much of its long, illustrious history. With its proximity to the legendary Khyber Pass, Afghanistan has been a travel destination for centuries, first by those journeying along the Silk Road, and later by those traveling the "Hippy Trail". Unfortunately, during the last 30+ years things have gotten decidedly worse for this rugged country. With sights such as the graceful Minaret of Jam, that rises out of the surrounding mountains like a beacon to the faithful, the magnificent Bamyan cave dwellings, and Band-e Amir, a series of 6 crater lakes that are so blue that the waters and sky seemingly blend as one, Afghanistan has a number of historic must-see destinations. Unfortunately due to war and strife, these precious sites have been off limits to the average PlanetHopper! The Afghanistan of recent days only represents the smallest part of a history that stretches back to a day when this was literally one of the world's busiest thoroughfares. The hope is that it will recapture this distinction once again.
