Groove to the cool sounds of the Caribbean beat when you take part in the Bahamas' Junkanoo Festival, a raucous party that features elaborately decorated costumes with traditional dance in a combination that will utterly blow your mind. The celebration is reminiscent of New Orleans' Mardi Gras and Rio's Carnival, but is distinctly Bahamian. Thousands dance through the streets in a riot of colors, gyrating to the rhythm of drums, cowbells, and whistles. Normally held during the period between Christmas and New Year, the festival beings in the early hours of the morning and lasts till dawn. In recent years, Junkanoo has become so popular that smaller celebrations have been taking place during the summer months on the islands of Grand Bahama, Bimini, Abaco, and Eleuthera. Harking back to the time when slaves would steal away to dance and sing to forget their woes, today it has transformed itself into an energetic celebration of life. It's the perfect opportunity for PlanetHoppers! to mingle with the locals on a stage where smiles and good will abound. You'll be swept away by the infectious beat; it will be too hard to resist!
