Wander through the ghostly streets of Montserrat's capital of Plymouth, a city that was almost completely destroyed by the 1995 eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano. Today the city lies abandoned under approximately 1.5 meters of ash, with a few rooftops peeking out lava flows across much of the city. In many ways it brings to mind a modern version of Pompeii and will leave you wondering what it must have been like during the eruption when the gates of hell had seemingly opened, sending fire and brimstone raining down from the sky. Not a pleasant thought and, even to this day, many of the island's inhabitants, who fled overseas, have still not returned. If you've ever scoffed at the destructive power of Mother Nature, a visit to this lonely, decimated place will humble you. If you're looking for a radical change from the sun and sand of the Caribbean, this is the place to visit.
