El Yunque National Forest
Hike into the clouds as you trek through Puerto Rico's El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rain forest in the United States. Drenched in rainfall throughout the year (over 200 inches), the cool, mountainous, sub tropical rainforest is a wonderland of lush foliage, cascading waterfalls, and large varieties of flora and fauna. At the very top of the mountain peaks the heavy rains have created a beautiful dwarf or 'elfin' forest, which is often shrouded in fog. The forest hosts a number of unique plant and animal species, such as the endangered Puerto Rican Parrot and the tiny coquis tree frogs that serenade the evening hours. Managed by the US Forest Service, El Yunque has an extensive network of hiking trails and also picnic facilities. Camping is also allowed. It's a tranquil forest – without snakes – and a place to truly appreciate the wonders of Mother Nature. Just make sure to wear the proper hiking shoes – the trails can be really slippery!
