Prepare yourself for fun and a bit of history when you visit Blackbeard's Castle. Perched above Charlotte Amalie, in the US Virgin Island, the "castle" is actually a round defensive tower built by the Danish in the 17th century. While the real Blackbeard (Edward Teach) may have prowled the waters nearby, there is no proof that this was really his "castle". Ignoring "the details" a tour through Blackbeard's Castle and the surrounding area - often called the "Williamsburg of the Caribbean" - will take you through historic manor estates, archeological sites, botanical gardens, a rum factory, gardens and waterfalls and, of course, pirate hideouts. Highlights include the gorgeous Amber waterfall (composed entirely of amber), the Rum Factory, life-sized statues of pirates crafted in copper, Villa Notman, which contains a selection of authentic Caribbean arts, and the round pirate tower, called Blackbeard's Castle. Don't forget to pick up a bottle of rum at the Rum Store on your way out. Drink sparingly - or you may get locked up in the "brig"!
