Bonaire Quick Travel Guide
With a travel rating of 40%, Bonaire is one of the world's best diving destinations, drawing PlanetHoppers! from all corners of the world to experience such hotspots as Klein Bonaire, Hilma Hooker, 1000 Steps, and the Country Garden. This is where the boys with the big bottles (air) come to play and, with virtually the entire island surrounded by one of the world's healthiest reef systems, it's simply a diver's paradise. While most come for the underwater wonders, and a handful of decent beaches, the things to see on land are modest. Nevertheless, there are some worthwhile options on this admittedly short list. Washington-Slagbaai National Park, the first national park in the Netherland Antilles, covers several hectares of tropical desert landscape that is home to cactuses, green iguanas, and even parrots. It contains Lake Gotomeer, an ideal place to watch the sunset and see flamingos take to the air on their migrations South. The Butterfly Farm is a pleasant change of pace and home to Blue Morphos and Giant Swallowtails. For the offbeat, try Donkey Sanctuary, which provides home to the descendants of the animals used during the island's salt mining boom. But, one way or another, you'll always be drawn back to the wonders below the turquoise blue waters of Bonaire. Just remember to come back up for air!
