St. Kitts and Nevis Quick Travel Guide
With a travel rating of 44%, St. Kitts and Nevis represent yet another brilliant little British enclave in the Caribbean. First discovered by Columbus during his second voyage of discovery, it was later settled by the British and scene of perhaps the region's most brutal subjugation of the native Caribs. In a single day in 1623, over 2000 natives were massacred at the place that has come to be known as Bloody Point. Thankfully, the sins of the past have faded away – though not forgotten. Today, St. Kitts and Nevis is considered one of the most easy going and friendly of destinations, which is saying something when you consider the entire Caribbean is generally pretty laid back. One of the best ways to gain a feel for the islands is to take a ride on the St. Kitts Scenic railway, which takes you on 48 km (~ 30 mile) journey along the eastern portion of St. Kitts, during which time you are given a fascinating overview of the history of islands. At the end of the trip, a bus will take you back to the capital, stopping at the famous Brimstone Hill Fortress - one of the best preserved military fortresses in all of the Americas and the location where the French and British fought some of the most epic (and bloody) battles of the Colonial era. While the threads of history are particularly strong here, there are still more than enough places to just kick back and reconnect on these sun-drenched islands. Topping this list is Frigate Bay Beach, a place where you can hang out for weeks on end, soaking up the friendly vibes and easy going nature of the locals. So, if you're a sun lover who's also something of a history buff, the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis is guaranteed to leave you totally satisfied.
