Hol Chan Marine Reserve
Are you looking for an unparalleled snorkeling and diving experience? Belize's Hol Chan Marine Reserve should satisfy you in spades. Located near Ambergris Caye, Hol Chan Marine Reserve - Mayan for 'little channel" – is little more than 23 meters (25 yards) wide and 9 meters (30 ft) deep. Covering approximately 7.8 sq km (3 sq miles), it packs a punch when it comes to marine life. Over 160 species of fish are found in the reserve, along with forty types of coral, several species of sponge, sea grasses and sea turtles. The reserve is divided into four zones, each representing one of the major marine habitat types in Belize. Two important attractions are Boca Ciega Blue Hole, a sinkhole, which opens into a larger underwater cavern, and Shark Ray Alley, a gathering place for sharks and stingrays. Remember, this is the most popular snorkeling/diving spot in Belize, so get there quickly to avoid the crowds!
