Try to banish images of Disney's Princess Ariel when you stare out over the water to Denmark's Little Mermaid, a statue based upon the classic tale by Hans Christian Anderson. The statue was first unveiled in 1913 and has been a popular tourist attraction ever since. The design has also become something of a pop icon, with a variety of inspired copies to be found throughout the world. But perhaps the statue's most profound legacy is the Disney fairy tale that has brought the wonder of mermaids to generations of little girls throughout the world. It's hard to imagine that old Hans wouldn't find this somewhat satisfying.
