Step into the shadows of the Cristo Rei Statue (Christ the King) located directly in the heart of Lisbon, Portugal and be amazed. Towering 28 meters (92 ft) in the air, it can be spotted from a great distance and was inspired by Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. The giant cement statue was erected as a plea to God to keep Portugal out of World War II and now has become a major draw for Christians and PlanetHoppers! alike. Perched at the River Tagus, the statue can be accessed by car, train, and ferry. Occupying a portion of the pedestal is the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Paz (Our Lady of Peace), which is open to the public. Take an elevator ride to the observation deck at the base of the statue, which at 82 meters (269 ft) offers breathtaking views of the city of Lisbon, the Tagus River and of the 25 de Abril Bridge. The monument awaits all with open arms. Visit it and you may experience bliss.
