Saint Sophia Cathedral
Embrace your spiritual side and visit Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kiev, which was constructed in the 11th century to rival Constantinople's Hagia Sophia Mosque. You don't have to be a Christian to admire its stylistic Byzantine features and golden domes that shine like beacons in the sun. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, aside from its main cathedral, the complex includes an ensemble of supporting structures, such as a four-story bell tower, the Metropolitan's house, the refectory, the Brothers' building, a seminary and other structures. Although Kiev is rapidly modernizing with lots of neon and glittering glass structures, coming here will transport you away from the urban jungle into Kiev's ancient past. Step inside the cathedral and admire the 12 huge columns dividing the interior into five naves, the thousand year old frescoes, pitch perfect acoustics, and great views from the bell tower. In recent years, the cathedral has been beautifully renovated and guided tours are available in several different languages. If you visit any of the "Seven Wonders of Kiev", Saint Sophia should be at the top of your list.
