Kaliningrad Oblast Quick Travel Guide
With a travel rating of 26%, Kaliningrad Oblast is literally a land unto itself. It is technically a part of Russia, but following the split of the old Soviet Union, it no longer has a direct land-link with its parent. This has acted to make it very independent and self-reliant, but surprisingly has not resulted in any type of organized independence movement. In many ways, the place feels more German than Russian as a result of it formerly being part of Prussia prior to WWII. This is perhaps most evident in the capital of Kaliningrad, where you will find such notable examples of Prussian architecture as the Königsberg Cathedral. But don't let the fairytale beauty of the place make you think that this is all that it has to offer. Kaliningrad Oblast also possesses over 90% of the world's amber, making a trip to an amber mine an absolute must - not to mention providing the perfect opportunity to make that all important souvenir purchase.
