Ukraine Quick Travel Guide
With a travel rating of 50%, Ukraine represents one of the most modern and progressive of the former Soviet states. This is a place where one moment you might find yourself at a palatial Crimean resort along the Black Sea Coast - the Ukraine's Riviera - and the next you'll be wandering through an UNESCO-listed site like Lviv's Old Town, a place that combines the medieval with clear reminders of the former Soviet Empire. Or trek through the vast Carpathian Mountains, considered the Golden Pearl of Ukraine. Another popular draw is the amazing Livadia Palace, which was a favorite summer retreat of Tsar Nicholas II and clearly brings to mind the romance of Europe that many of us automatically associate with such places as Paris and Prague, but is represented just as proudly here. Then if you're looking for something a bit on the wild side, a visit to the ghostly Prypiat amusement park, which opened on the day of the Chernobyl disaster and is now forever frozen in time. Today the site of the solitary Ferris wheel - which was never used - will chill you to the bone. Just remember to stay on the concrete as there's still some residue radiation even after all these years. Or play it safe and just spend your days wandering the fantastically diverse capital of Kiev in Odessa – the Pearl of the Black Sea, or Yalta - the jewel of the Crimean Peninsula. In short, the Ukraine is something of a bridge between modern Europe and the former Soviet-bloc that blends the old and the new in a way that will enchant and beguile you.
