National Park of American Samoa
Prepare your diving gear, lace up your boots, or get your digital camera out, the National Park of American Samoa offers lots of different options for PlanetHoppers! Distributed across three separate islands, the park offers coral reefs, snorkeling and scuba diving, hiking through rain forests, and a remarkable biodiversity in flora and fauna. There is so much natural beauty to be found here, it will simply take your breath away. Walk through trails in the rain forest that is home to large fruit bats, a number of gecko species, the Pacific boa, and many rare and unusual birds, including the Samoan Starling and Pacific imperial-pigeon, which just touches upon the nearly 500 flowering plants and 100 endemic plant species found here. Emerge out of the forest onto an isolated rocky beach and smell the refreshing ocean mist and take in the expansive vista and the rugged surrounding cliffs. Dive beneath the waves and be amazed by the diversity of marine life that includes over a thousand species of fish and coral, including sea turtles and humpback whales. One of the farthest flung from the rest of the American National Park system – and the only one south of the equator - some come here just to finish off their tour of all the 58 "national parks". No matter the reason, the park maybe far away, but definitely worth the effort to visit.
