Sit back, relax and absorb the amazing scenery of the Australian Outback aboard The Ghan, Australia's version of the trans-Siberian Railway. Named after the Afghan camel men who helped explore the continent's remote interior, it now represents the greatest of all Australian journeys. First opened for business in 1923, the route originally ran from Adelaide to Alice Springs; but in 2004, the final section was completed from Alice Springs to Darwin and now spans a massive 3,000 km (~ 1,800 miles) from end to end and bisects the continent in half. A journey on the train is an unsurpassed way to travel to the two gems of Australia's Northern Territory – the Red Centre and the tropical Top End. The epic travel adventure takes up to 50 hours, but depending on your level of service (Platinum, Gold or Red), you will have the comfort of beds, meals and hot showers. The Ghan delivers a sense of the majesty and the sheer magnitude of the Outback and is truly a journey of a lifetime.
