Island hop to Majuro, the capital of the Marshall Islands, which offers PlanetHoppers! a glimpse into what the rest of this nation of atolls and islands is like. Three of Majuro's islands - Delap, Uliga and Darrit - combine to form the nation's capital, also known as D-U-D. Get close to the island culture and take a drive out to Laura, a town that is only 10 feet above sea level – but still the highest point in the Majuro Atoll – and home to fantastic beaches. With water all around, the ocean will always beckon. Arno Atoll and Kokolap Island are fantastic dive sites with coral reefs, thousands of fish, and fascinating WWII wrecks - outdone only by Kalalin Pass, often referred to as "the aquarium". Staying with the water theme, visit the RRE Mariculture facility. It's one of the largest pearl farms in the Pacific, which harvests over 100,000 clams per year, including precious black pearls. Although relatively isolated, Majuro is not totally bucolic. The city has a port, shopping district, hotels, and an international airport. It's a mix of the old and new and well worth seeing.
