Isle of Pines
Discover the Isle of Pines at the southern tip of New Caledonia and located near the Tropic of Cancer. Often called the "Jewel of the South Pacific", the island is surrounded by pristine beaches, swaying palms, spectacular coral, and soaring Araucaria pines that can grow up to 60 meters (~ 200 ft) high. The island was given its name by Captain Cook who discovered it, but to the indigenous inhabitants this slice of nirvana is known as Kunie. If you like exploring nature, taking long walks, swimming, snorkeling, diving, meeting local people or simply lying on magnificent white sand beaches, then you could easily spend days and days here. The best beaches and bays include Kanumera Cove and Kuto and Upi Bays, the fantastic Oro Bay, with its magnificent lagoon and natural swimming pool. In the past, the Isle of Pines was a place of exile for convicts, and even today it is relatively isolated. Life here is unhurried and relaxed and most live on "island time". You don't have to be a convict to exile yourself to this gorgeous paradise.
