Explore the misty confines of Milford Sound, a place of towering cliffs that plunge hundreds of meters into the sea. Located on the South Island of New Zealand, Rudyard Kipling once proclaimed it the "8th wonder of the world", and even the producers of The Lord of the Rings movies couldn't resist featuring it as a backdrop in their Oscar winning movies. It gives the beauty of Mother Nature a whole new meaning. Luxuriant rainforest clings to sheer rock walls, and waterfalls tumble hundreds of meters to the sea below. One of the best ways to get the full impact is to take a journey by boat – or kayak - through the maze-like corridors of the Sound. Most PlanetHoppers! going there take one of the many boat tours available, which usually last between 1–2 hours, or overnight cruises, which offers the ultimate dinner, bed and breakfast experience. An underwater tourist observatory found in one of the bays provides viewing of black coral, usually only found in much deeper waters. On rainy days, you can admire the play of the wind with the numerous waterfalls. As the most visited tourist spot in New Zealand, you can get to the Sound with many forms of transportation (cars, bus, plane). But perhaps the most adventurous way to get to Milford Sound is to walk the Milford Track, a 4 day walk that will give you plenty of the time to admire some of the most amazing scenery found anywhere on the planet.
