Tonga Quick Travel Guide
With a travel rating of 42%, Tonga is the only remaining monarchy in the South Pacific with almost too many islands to count. (176 islands scattered over 700,000 square kilometers (270,000 sqmi), 52 of which are inhabited - some for over 3000 years!) Nicknamed the "Friendly Islands", Tonga may be the perfect place to immerse yourself in Polynesian culture. No doubt you should take in a performance of tau'olunga, the traditional Tongan dance for virgins, and drink some kava (in moderation, of course). With most of the population living on the main island of Tongatapu, there are a score of worthwhile destinations to visit here. Anahulu Cave is a fantastic underground swimming pool on the Eastern Side. Ha'atafu is a great slice of sandy beach with coral reefs that is a delight for snorkelers, divers and surfers too. The Mapu'a 'a Vaea Blowholes are several miles of spectacular spraying water. And not to be ignored on any account is Ha'amonga'a Maui, the "Pacific Stonehenge". Make your way to the many other islands and visit Ene'io Botanical Garden, Dive the reefs of Vava'u and do some whale watching too. Kayak through the reefs of Ha'apai. See the ancient burial ground on 'Uiha. Get close to the active volcano on Tofua - or the dormant one on Kao, if you're too nervous. With so many islands to choose from, you could literally spend a lifetime exploring the island of Tonga in perfect sun-drenched bliss...
