Guyana Quick Travel Guide
With a travel rating of 46%, Guyana is another one of South America's smaller countries that is often neglected in favor of the continent's more mainstream destinations. However, it would be hard for most people to say they've never heard of Guyana, as it was the location of the gruesome Jonestown mass suicides in the late 1970's. But today this stigma has mostly worn off to be replaced with a reputation for a fantastic range of festivals and natural wonders. Chief among these is undoubtedly Kaitur Falls. While most may not initially recognize the name, it is in fact among the most powerful falls in the world for sheer volume of water and literally shakes the surrounding rain forest with its force. But if you really want to experience Guyana at its finest, then come during the annual Mashramani Festival, celebrating Guyana's independence from Britain. It is a party that may only find its equal during Carnival time further south in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Actually, that pretty much sums up Guyana - it punches far above its weight class.
